Battersea Power Station fires up 98 EV charge points

Case Study | EV Charging

London’s iconic Battersea Power Station development has switched on 98 Electric Vehicle (EV) CTEK charge points installed by charging infrastructure and management specialist EVC.

One of the single biggest EV charging installations in the UK, the 49 dual outlet CC2 charge points designed by Sweden’s CTEK are in an underground car park at the landmark 42-acre riverside neighbourhood in Central London.

The car park, used by both residents and visitors, is positioned in Circus West Village, the first phase of the regeneration project. Circus West Village is home to more than 1,800 people plus a mix of bars, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Circus West Village is adjacent to the Grade II* listed Power Station, which at its peak supplied a fifth of London’s electricity. The building and its four chimneys are an instantly recognisable landmark of the capital.

EVC was asked by Battersea Power Station to install and manage the charge points. EVC incorporated CTEK’s load balancing system which dynamically monitors and manages the power distribution across the charge points to optimise charging and protect the local grid.

CTEK’s award-winning CC2 charge point provide up to 22kW AC current at each outlet. In January CTEK won Electric Vehicle Charge Point Manufacturer of the Year at the UK’s 2023 E-Mobility Awards. CTEK, based in Sweden, has sold more than 100,000 charging units.

Nick Ballamy, CEO at EVC, said: “We are extremely proud to have been part of this project at the historic Battersea Power Station. This partnership represents a significant milestone in our mission to revolutionise transportation and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.

“By seamlessly integrating sustainable practices into iconic landmarks like Battersea Power Station, we are paving the way for a greener and cleaner future.”

Cecilia Routledge, CTEK’s Global Director Energy and Facilities, said: “It is very exciting to know that almost 100 CTEK charge outlets are now powering EVs at such an iconic London location.

“It’s striking that a former power station that burnt coal for decades is now a hotspot for EVs using electricity to power the green transport revolution.

“It is a far-sighted commitment by Battersea Power Station to install EV charging at such a scale but absolutely the right decision as EV sales continue to grow in the UK. As EV ownership gathers pace, the UK will need more mass charging opportunities for drivers.”

EVC this year secured up to £165 million in investment to accelerate its ambition to deliver 100,000 EV charge points across the UK by 2027. CTEK is in a five-year partnership with EVC to supply its AC charging equipment and scalable load balancing solutions.
